The Organizations part of Cabo Pulmo Vivo have created this site to share our concern for the protection of Cabo Pulmo, one of the richest ecosystems in the Gulf of California.

15 years after being declared a Natural Protected Area, this reef is internationally recognized as an example of marine conservation and community participation. However its future is threatened by one of the most controversial tourist-residential projects of recent times: Cabo Cortés.

This mega-touristic project is planned to be built a few meters north of Cabo Pulmo and consisting, among others, of more than 30,000 rooms (in hotels and homes), 3 golf courses, a marina and an airport. The intention to build a development of this scale near a fragile coral reef ecosystem is hard to understand. Even harder to understand, is the decision of the environmental authorities to grant environmental authorizations to this project, as they did in September 2008.

Fortunately, we are on time for the authorities to correct their own mistake and withdraw the authorizations for this development.

Cabo Pulmo was among the finalists of Iniciativa México

Iniciativa México was a campaign launched nationwide by major media representatives to reward projects with a positive impact in their communities and in the Country.

47,049 projects participated, of which only 25 were chosen as finalists. "Cabo Pulmo le apostó a la conservación" of Friends for the Preservation of Cabo Pulmo was one of them.

Congratulations to the people of Cabo Pulmo on this great achievement. We hope this award will allow them to continue joining forces for the preservation of the only coral reef in the Gulf of California.
